It’s Queens The Magazine – Summer 2015

Lisa Vidal, one of the stars of the hit BET show Being Mary Jane, is a pretty hot commodity these days. The Whitestone native  describes her career in show business and while she’ll always be a “Queens Girl” at heart.
Who knew the borough had signature cocktails with its own namesake spirit? Chris Murillo is the creator of Queens Courage, an old-style gin he hopes to one day distill right here in Astoria. He believes in the economy of Queens, so much so that he quit his day job to bet on his gin.
Speaking of courage, it took some courage for Jen Khedaroo to rate the Top 5 Chefs in Queens, because I’m sure everyone is going to have their own opinion. There are so many great restaurants to choose from in Queens, but you should give all five of these spots a shot. You won’t be disappointed.
What wasn’t quite as hard was finding 15 amazing doctors for our It’s List, who aren’t just working to keep their Queens patients healthy, but are also at the cutting edge of their fields. Who says you have to go to Manhattan for state-of-the-art health care?
Think you have to spend big bucks to get in shape? Think again. We found some great parks in the borough that are also great places to workout, and we had an expert – Bill Burgos, former strength ad conditioning coach with the Knicks and now with the Orlando Magic – tailor a workout for each one. The Parks Department has been putting state-of-the-art workout equipment in city parks for quite a while now, so you have no excuse to get your body in beach shape.
We love to feature local musicians in It’s Queens. This issue we turn our focus to Rocco & Lizzie, who play what they call “Queens Rock.”
Queens Buzz is a favorite among readers. From coyotes to summer concerts, it’s what your neighbors are talking about. Speaking of summer concerts, there’s still some tickets left for the James Taylor, Alabama Shakes and Santana concerts this summer at Forest Hills Stadium – get them while you still can!
